Mostly poor and rural. West Virginia is known for its timber , coal  and mining. It is rightly named the “Mountain State”, and it boasts the longest whitewater rivers and most wilderness in the eastern United States. For this reason it has become a popular stop for hikers, canoers, and outdoor activities for many. Charleston, the largest city has many Victorian-era buildings which can be seen through out the city.

The main attraction in the state is, Harpers Ferry which has been restored as a national park.  The place is most identified by John Brown, who seized a federal arsenal in 1859 in hopes of raising a black insurgency against slavery. It didn’t work and his men were rounded up by General Robert E. Lee’s forces. The town is reminiscent of that era and has been kept that way since. Be sure to also visit the Blue Ridge Parkway as it wheels its way out of the Shenandoah National Park. It is quite the scenic drive and should not be missed.
