The state of Maine sits proudly on the Northeast Coast of the United States.  The first place in America to see the sun rise? Not really, there is a small island in the Aleutian Chains in Alaska just west of the International Date Line that takes the honors. Enough trivia. Maine is known for its rocky coastline, lighthouses and the best lobster in the world.  It  is dotted with small fishing villages up the coast and each is as charming as the next. The city of Portland lies on the southern edge of the coast and is the largest city in the state. It is not a large city so many people go the 90 or so miles south to Boston, Massachusetts for any semblance of city life. But people do not come here for that.

Maine has miles and miles of wilderness when one travels away from the coastline, To the north is the city of Bangor, a short stint to Arcadia National Park. It is a favorite summer location for New Englanders during the short summer months. At the tip of the state are the cities of Caribou, and Presque Isle on the border of Canada. Unknown to many people is that many people in the northern part of the state still speak French; the influence of French Quebec has filtered over to their neighbor to the south. Maine is a wonderful state, off the beaten path and well worth the visit, especially when the leaves turn in late September and early October.
