The Grand Canyon State is rich in many types of landscapes. From the south where there is the Sonora Desert around Tucson, it stretches north to Phoenix and to the mountains near Flagstaff. Arizona is rich in Indian and Hispanic culture and one can find much evidence of this throughout the state. The capital of Phoenix is a metropolis of culture, entertainment and activities. To the south around !20 miles is the smaller city of Tucson. Here is the famous University of Arizona and many places for the astronomy enthusiast. Summers in Arizona can be brutal, so it is best to do any traveling or outdoor activities before the afternoon heat arrives.

One hidden secret about this state is the wonderful Gem Show that takes place in early February each year. The city of Tucson is literally covered wall to wall with gem dealers from around the world. There you will find some of the most spectacular rocks on display. A day excursion to Nogales, Mexico is also a popular activity to those who live in the state. It is close friendly and full of bargains for the shopaholic. Don’t forget to try the wonderful food there as well.
